Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), has been relentlessly working, through its Civil Aviation Committee (CAC), for :

    1. Creating additional Facilities at present airport (Lehegaon-Pune) and Enhancing the Air connectivity of the same with more domestic and international destinations
    2. Expediting the decisions relating to Independent International Airport in Pune region

In the last few years, the CAC  had taken a number of initiatives to pursue these matters with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Airports Authority of India, Government of Maharashtra and District Collectorate.

CAC had organized   press conferences and also given articles and write-ups to the Press and our magazine – Sampada to highlight the critical need for setting up of an independent airport for Pune. CAC emphasized the following main points :

The CAC  highlighted the fact that delay in implementing the Independent Airport Project in Pune region is causing enormous loss of revenue to the Local, State and Central Governments. The hospitality industry is also adversely affected because most of the Pune bound international travelers are not in a position to land in Pune. They have to stay over in Mumbai/other destinations which add to their costs. The delay will also be affecting the International Convention Centre and International Exhibition Centre Projects coming up in Pune region. Absence of independent international airport is also hampering the choice of Pune as a preferred destination by some major companies.

CAC  stressed the fact that the proposed Airport will give a tremendous boost to the economic activity not only in Pune district but also in the neighboring districts such as Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Solapur etc.

The CAC also highlighted Major  Constraints at Present Airport at Pune
          Limited hours of operation

     –     Restrictions on civil aircraft movements from 8:00 a.m.  to 10:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. And on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. To 5:00 p.m.

Limited Length of runway preventing larger aircrafts to land
Almost Impossible to add more movements
Importantly Air Force Requirements of the future can be fully met only if there is an independent International Airport at Pune
Additional Facilities can not be created for
    - Cargo Terminal
    - Parking Bays
    - Critical Infrastructure from security angle
    - Hangars for General Aviation

During the year, the CAC gathered vital inputs from the industry about the need for additional air connectivity within India and to international destinations. CAC is also pursuing with the Airlines for establishing direct air connectivity from Pune to Vadodara, Kochi, Jaipur, Kolkata, Lucknow etc. CAC is pursuing the direct air connectivity with Singapore and Dubai.

    Interaction with Government :

The Office Bearers and senior officials of MCCIA have held several discussions with the Ministries at the Central Level, Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister and concerned senior officials in the State Government, Pune Division and District Collectorate.

At these meetings, the CAC has  made the Ministers and senior officials known its concerns that the success of two of the most prestigious projects in Pune region viz International Exhibition Centre and International Convention Centre depends on the setting up of Independent international airport at Pune and establishing direct air connectivity with more international destinations.

The CAC has also voiced its concern about sustaining the tempo of tremendous investments being planned by existing and potential investors in Pune region. Many of them would obviously prefer direct international air connectivity.
